Roof washing
Streaks come off. Granules stay on.
Those black streaks running down your shingles are not dirt, and another spring of rain will not move them. It is algae, and it feeds on the filler in an asphalt shingle. Left alone it holds moisture against the roof and quietly takes years off it.
A pressure washer will take the streaks off. It will also take the granules off, and those granules are the only thing standing between your shingles and the sun. Once they are gone the roof is on a clock. Ask any shingle manufacturer what they think of pressure on a roof.
We soft wash it instead. The solution goes on gently, kills the algae and the moss at the root, and the weather carries the rest off over the following weeks. Beds under the drip line get tarped and pre-wet, and we work off ladders so nobody is tramping around up there.
What you get
- No pressure on the shingles, so the granules stay where they belong.
- Kills algae and moss at the root, not just the color on top.
- The gentle method the shingle manufacturers actually ask for.
- Landscaping under the drip line tarped and soaked before we start.
- Puts a roof replacement off instead of hurrying one along.
How it goes
Three steps, no runaround.

Soft wash, explained
High pressure vs. the A1 soft wash.
Most people who are nervous about a wash are picturing the wrong machine. Here is the honest version, including the part where high pressure is the right answer.
Straight high pressure
- Drives water up under your siding and in behind your shingles.
- Fuzzes wood, strips paint, and knocks the granules off an asphalt roof.
- Takes the green off the surface and leaves the roots, so it is back by August.
- It is the right tool on concrete. That is about where the list ends.
The A1 soft wash
- Low pressure, closer to a garden hose than a fire hose.
- The cleaner does the work: it kills mold, mildew and algae at the root.
- Safe on siding, shingles, painted trim, plants and whoever is in the yard.
- Stays clean a lot longer, because nothing is left alive to grow back.
So on your driveway we bring the pressure. On your siding and your roof we do not. If a guy quotes you a house wash and spends the whole visit telling you how much PSI his machine puts out, ask him what he plans on doing with it.
Questions we get
What people ask before they let anybody near their roof.
Will pressure washing damage my roof?
Yes, and quicker than most people expect. High pressure strips the granules off asphalt shingles, lifts the edges, and can push water back up under the courses. The damage does not always show the day it happens. It shows up on the first hard rain after.
What does soft washing a roof actually mean?
Low pressure and a cleaning solution, put on from a ladder and rinsed gently. The solution kills the algae and the moss where they live, in the shingle. Nothing scrubs, nothing scrapes and nothing pounds on your roof.
Is the solution safe for my plants and pets?
With the right prep, yes. We tarp what we can and soak the beds under the drip line with plain water before we start and again after. Keep pets inside while we are working and let the rinse dry off. That is the whole precaution, and we do not skip it.
How often does a roof need washing?
Around here, every three to five years covers most houses. Shaded roofs and anything sitting under oaks come back faster. The honest answer is to call when you can see the streaks from the street, not on a schedule somebody sold you.
“A roof is the most expensive thing on your house. That strikes me as a funny place to go experimenting with pressure.”
